Vinegar is brilliant for cleaning out tanks! Its a natural disinfectant so won’t harm your mice if they eat it. It really cuts through soaked on pee stains. I dilute mine with a bit of water and put it in a spray bottle (like the ones you buy for plants). The only downside is that I hate the smell of vinegar!

Ingredients: Vingegar, lemon juice, rock salt, water

Vinegar is a natural disinfectant, so is the base for this solution. It is acidic (about pH 2) which is good for removing wee. You can use any type of vinegar: white wine vinegar smells the least/ if all all, balsamic is the most acid. I use malt vinegar which is the most acidic compared to price, which i buy in big plastic containers from the supermarket. To get the best results, dilute the vinegar 60:40 with water, as too strong it can be off-putting to more delicate respiratory systems and the smell may confuse them.

The next ingredient is lemon juice. It is very important to add this, as using just an individual acid is bad practise and can lead to it being less effective over time. I add a few drops (about 10) from a Cif thing we have in the fridge as using an actual lemon is more wasteful.

The above is a recipe which is well known in small animal circles, however I have altered i slightly by adding rock salt. This adds an abrasive element requiring less scrubbing. It also seems to bars better as you don’t have to scrub from every angle to be effective. Rock salt is the best to add as sea salt is too fine crystals for this to work properly. It also has a higher dissolving factor than rock salt.

You don’t have to rinse the solution off, and i just leave it to dry slightly, and then wipe off with a towel the remaining liquid.
