Score: 7/10 for original purpose, 10/10 overall *Changed to 10/10 on 26/11/08 - see below*

These hang onto the sides of the cage on a horizontal bar, however they seem to hang better if the horizontal is a supporting bar an the rest are vertical as otherwise the bottom support has a habit of fitting through the bars which can be tricky to remove. The normal sizes are 7 and 9cm diameters.

These are good as they can’t be nibbled or knocked over, and the cup is independent to the hook/ support making removal for cleaning/ refilling slightly easier. What could be considered a down size is that they are 4cm deep so multiple mice getting down into them may not work.

However I have enough food bowls, so I put them in with newspaper in once as an experiment, and now they use them as mini beds - preferred them in the summer - I assume they liked the cool metal!

*update 26/11/08* - With younger and more agile mice these are now really coming into their own as brilliant food bowls. In my large cage I tend to have a coop cup high up near the top near a hammock/ rope toy and a more conventional food bowl lower down. The fact that these attach to the bars means that I don’t have to restrict my cage layouts to their suitability and these can also even be used as “mini levels” by the mice far away from toys as the thicker metal rim/ base means it’s effectively a mini ledge too.

Being stainless steel these are incredibly easy to clean and you don’t get sticky, disgusting lumps of poo/wee/food stuck to the bowl that you have to leave to soak for ages. This also means that they’re more than suitable to go in the dishwasher.

The form I have is the one that hooks onto the bars (as opposed to the bolted variety) and the only downside is that if hooked onto horizontal bars the bottom bit of the metal attachment sticks out of the cage making removal for cleaning/refilling a job for 2 hands. However this is easily sorted by clipping it onto a horizontal support bar on a side of the cage where the main bars are vertical.

This is a good bowl, its deep, easy to clean and holds anything. As it’s made of metal it keeps the water cooler as well. Mice cant knock it over either!

The idea is good, it keeps the food off the floor so away from spills. Can place away from everyday foods and be used solely for treats too. Not the type of bowl I would buy as a choice but a good bowl anyhow and very sturdy so no accidental spills.

The Coop Cup is a metal feeding bowl with a metal bracket, designed for birds but also suitable for small mammals.

Pros:
As it’s made of metal, it’s not only as chew-proof as you’re going to get, but it’s also break-proof. Great for gnawy rodents and clumsy people. :)

Cons:
Due to the design of the metal bracket, it only fits well if the cage has vertical bars. Also, the bracket forces the cup to hang with an upward slant, and this, combined with the height of the cup itself, can make it a bit of a stretch for small rodents to access. I don’t think it would be a good feeding bowl for mice with limited mobility, unless the cup was carefully positioned - e.g. next to a platform.

Overall:
The Coop Cup is, in general, a decent product. It’s not particularly aesthetically pleasing, and I really wish the hanging bracket was better designed so that it would hang on a level, but it is the sturdiest of the readily available food bowls. If you require an indestructible food bowl then it’s definitely value for money.
