As my mice prefer to burrow and nest as oppose to climb, I’ve found toilet rolls to be a super cheap and readily available toy for their cage.

Pros:
Essentially free or just about. Usually thrown away and recyclable. Also readily available (I get millions after telling my OH and his parents, as well as my own, to save them for me, I have constant supply).
Great for climbing, burrowing and squashing down to make nests. Can be cut into various shapes and ‘unwound’ (basically unpeeled and uncurled so it becomes more of a loop-the-loop as opposed to a tube) this is great, esp for shy mice as the high loops give them a feeling of being covered over whilst still allowing visibility for fascinated owners! I also like to cut a few holes in mine for curious furry heads to poke through, slot them together to make mazes and string them up and attach them to wires to make hammocky-bridgy things which mine love. They also love it if you stick one in an old sock to make an instant bed!

Cons:
Not many! Readily available, cheap, disposable and recyclable. The only problem is you have to go through a whole roll of toilet roll to get to one!

Overall
I would say a great way of enriching your mousies pad without breaking the bank. There are endless ways of changing it up so your mousies don’t get bored, they’re also lightweight and safe to nibble on.

Great little tubes and tunnels for mice. You can connect the together or attach them to boxes to make tunnelling systems. I also decorate mine by covering them with wrapping paper then making paper clip chains to hang them in various places in the cage. Once they get to destroyed or smelly they can be recycled or thrown away.

Price: Free with your toilet paper
Score: 10/10

Pros
Tubes are free with your toilet paper. If your crazy enough you can ask your friends and family to collect them for you as well! You know there 100% safe and a good size. And you can throw them out without worrying about price once they start to look ratty.

Cons
As long as you don’t use the same roll forever and never change them over there are no cons. This is a fantastic and free product that us mousy lovers can use to our full advantage!!

These are usually thrown away or recycled, but make excellent toys/houses/nests/shelter for any small animal!

I don’t have chewers, so they stay in tact, which does mean I have more things that need to be recycled after use, but it also means they last longer!

I like to make a simple tunnel system from them and then cover them with substrate, with a few tubes stuck half out, so they know something’s down there. It’s fantastic to see their little heads shoot through the substrate with no notice! I think this is a fantastic way of giving them a more natural environment, without using space or spending money you wouldn’t usually spend.

I also chain some up, to make tunnels at the top of the cage, using up even more practically wasted space.

Simply throwing them into the cage works wonders, too, as they just scurry through the tubey heap, investigating!
