As I have hairless mice extra protein is important to keep body temp up. I read about mealworms on AAM and decided to try some out on my mousies! I tried them 2 different ways - dry and rehydrated (soaked in warm water for about 30mins). My mice love both versions but the dried ones can stay in the cage for a few days without going smelly and horrible.

Pros:
My hairless and fancy mice love them. They’re great for an occasional treat and to keep hairless mices’ body temp up which is important especially if you have virtually hairless mice. I have noticed a huge difference in the temp of my hairless mice since feeding them mealworms. They’re also relatively cheap and easy to come by and being dry they last pretty much as long as dry food mix does and are very good for tempting shy mice onto hands!

Cons:
There’s really no way of knowing what exactly is in them so it is difficult to decide how many to give and how often. They’re also quite smelly, even dry and not really great if you’re squeamish! I would also recommend breaking them up as, particularly for smaller mice as they’re an awkward shape, size and length.

Overall:
I would definitely recommend them as an occasional treat for mice as part of their varied diet. Especially for hairless mice as they really make a difference in keeping the body temp up. I feed them to my hairless 3 times a week and they’re always first on the menu when the food bowl goes in. I would advise getting them from a reputable source, like a garden centre, so there is a better chance of them being fed on a quality diet, or breed your own if you have to facilities.
