For this review I will be discussing the “paper wool” which is shreds of a white material somewhere between kitchen tissue and j-cloth like material. Safe bed also do flakes or shavings which I would not recommend, they do not fluff up and therefore make a poor sleeping bedding as in my experience the animal is lying on them not within them for warmth unless you are using great amounts at a time. Safe bed also makes a fluff bedding, although marked as bio-degrading when eaten can choke an animal or when wet it can make very strong strands when rubbed which could cut of circulation to a paw it gets caught on or throttle an animal.

I used SAFE BED for the first time recently, normally I’m a firm believer in throwing in great amounts of toilet tissue and allowing the mice to get to work.

I have in the past used a cheap bedding of a similar material for times like nesting mothers where I have had to replace wet bedding and not wanted to force them to remake their nest from scratch, and keep some for sick mice for vet visits and stuff so I will compare to this.

I found the safe bed very good and found it did not scrunch up in the nest as quickly as the cheaper brand did, you know the point at which the bedding become more a mattress than a full nest.

It was white so easy to tell when dirty and did not pick up the litter, and therefore stayed clean for a few cage changes before it lost its “bounce back” and needed a change. I would say there was about a week and a 1/2 between changes in a cage with 5 females using the bed.

On the down side I found I had to individually separate the layers of the bedding or it would not have lasted even a 1/3 as long as it did.

I also found it hard to tear and would worry about possible dangers from that, but it was so wide I felt it would not cut in or anything on something as small as a mouse and the majority of the strands were not very long so would move rather than tangle together, if you know what I mean.

All in all I would say it was very cost effective, and for those with a larger collection of mice it is sold in large trade size bags in various pet stores.

I have used this in the past for bedding before I got my paper shredder and moved over to shredded newspaper.

This is very soft and absorbant bedding which makes it good for getting rid of wee puddles although this means it has to be changed at least every other day as it quickly collects dirt. The way it is made suggests that many sheets of the stuff are shedded at once meanig that sometimes you have to pick apart the strips as they are superficially stuck together.

Although the low density means it is easy for even the smallest mouse to drag around the cage; when in the bed, it acts more as a mattress than as a nesting material. As it is so light and flexible it just gets squashed down when even a 30g mouse sits on it, rather than keeing shape and allowing them to snuggle into it.

There are also a few safety concerns regarding this bedding. The fibers used are similar, but less dense, than those in j-cloths. in fact the company also makes j-cloth thickness substrate. However the less dense form means that it is easy for little mouse nails to become trapped between the fibres. Also it’s very hard to break the pieces apart - you have to actually tear it - which could present hazards if it got caught around a limb, tail or neck.

Although this bedding is cheap and lasts a good while, I personally wouldn’t use it while there are just as good alternatives out - especially for nesting mothers where the dangers are increased for the young.

Easy to keep clean ,absorbent and dust free and natural.

Safer for tiny limbs than other bedding but I would not use with babies as can still tangle and cut off circulation.

I like this bedding and so do the mice! I like how it stays where you put it, unlike other beddings eg the jay cloth flakes, which get dragged everywhere around the cage! It is soft and warm and the mice seem to love it! They burrow under it to make a cosy little nest and it always stays fluffed up in the nest box so they can hide! It is white, so you can tell when it’s dirty. Some of the strands come stuck together, and I have to separate them, which takes a bit of time. *ONE WARNING!* The only thing I will say where it could be dangerous, is for baby animals. I would never use it as a nest material for anything baby, as I once had a litter of rabbits that I was hand rearing, and I kept them in a box with this bedding, and one of them strangled on a strand of this bedding that got caught round it’s neck.
