Hemp horse bedding. This looks very like woodshavings, but is actually a lot softer and smells lovely (to me anyway).
Plus points:
Very economical, 1 bale will last for ages.
Very absorbent
Environmentally friendly
Warm and soft
Nice fresh natural odour
It floats, so doesn’t end up going down the plug hole by accident
Doesn’t stain white mice (or other colours of mice!)
Mice like it!
Negative points:
Tends to migrate around the house on everything.
Sticks to hammocks so each bit needs picked off individually before hammocks get laundered.
It floats, meaning you need to skim it off any water in the bath/sink/ bucket etc. This increases cage cleaning time.
I like this product, and would use it more often if I only had one or two cages to maintain, as the increased mess would then be negligible.

My mice love this substrate! I fill the bases of my cages almost to the top to allow for burrowing and this bedding is great for it. I mix it with Carefresh or Back2Nature (which ever I can get hold of) to bulk it up a little, as it is horse bedding and more suitable for making thick compact ‘deep litter’ beds in stables rather than have tunnels created in it by mice. Totally absorbant, and hides mice smells (I have a entire male mouse who used to be stinky, but with this bedding he isn’t stinky at all). It lasts ages too.
Cost effective, easy to use, the mice love it, and it’s easily hoovered/brushed up off the carpet. The only trouble is I can’t find it near me, so mum has to get a bale and bring it when she comes to visit!
