Hay is great for my mice. Its warm, edible and safe. You can also buy it in large quantities for a low price. Most people swear by hay as it provides a great roughage in a mouse’s diet, plus weaving in and out of it ‘combs’ the hair and makes it shiny.
I have also found that mice can make very complicated nests out of them that they simply can not do with paper, as hay is of course a lot stronger.
The downsides to hay is that it can contain mites. This can be avoided though by freezing all hay before giving it to your mice, which kills any mites. Also, as mice eat it, its usually all gone by the end of the week!
It might be wise to give pregnant and nursing mice some toilet paper to line nests with. You can also do this with any mice, as they hay will keep them warm and the paper is something soft to lie on. Given the choice, I found that my mice weave a nest, then line the inside with wood chips anyway.

Hay is always in the house for the chinchillas, so I thought I’d try some with the meece and it is definitely being eaten, so they must like it. Also, they have moved all of the babies from the rescue litter into an enclosed food dish that they have lined with hay. And it seems to be getting softer, so I think they gnaw on it before adding it to the nest.

My mice love this for tumbling in it cleans their coat and smells natural and pleasant. They enjoy nibbling it and snuggling up with it. The product is cheap so those people who do have a budget will find this a good source for floor covering as well. All in all a good product at low cost and smells fresh as well.
