I use this litter with all my animals and it’s great! Controls smells and is quite absorbent. And it’s got little to no dust! Very highly recommended on my part! The only down side is if you’ve got several cages/tanks to do, you end up spending a bit. It would be fantastic if BM Paper Litter came in bulk sacks!

*update 19/9/07* - The last couple of batches I’ve bought have been completely different from how it used to be. It is very heavy, dusty, and looks a lot like “normal” clay cat litter. It aggravates one of my meece who tends to be sensitive to dusty substrates quite badly now and several of my rats had quite bad porphoryn around their eyes and nose when I started using a new bag. Therefore, unless it changes back, I won’t be buying it again.

I used this as my main substrate for a good 4years for my animals (including campbell hamsters, syrian hamsters, rats as well as mice). The cat litter has no smell at all unlike others which is good for rodents with delicate respiratory systems. Although it is impossible to call anything dust-free, it is the universally (as in you don’t get bad batches at all) least dusty paper cat litter i’ve ever found. You may find a bit of dust if you tip it into the cage tray, but if you take handfuls out of the bag it’s even less so - although this takes longer.

I personally have always used it with a layer of sheeted newspaper underneath as occasionally dried wee will stick it to the base of the cage making it harder to remove. Also as the bits themselves are quite small (compared to carefresh) they are prone to being chucked about if you have a shallow-based tray for your cage.

The only negative thing I have found is that there isn’t always some in stock at the shops - I guess as it’s not first choice for cat owners. This means that if you are relying on it as your main substrate you have to bulk buy as you may be left in the lurch.

*update 19/9/07* - From summer 07 this product has changed for the worse despite retaining the same packaging with no outward sign of difference - legalities of this are unsure, but it’s a fine line.

The product is now no longer nice and soft like it used to be, but heavy smaller sharper flakes in lots of dust. It appears similar to clay-based cat litter leading me to presume that it is no longer 100% paper. The large amounts of dust on their own make this product now totally unsuitable for small animal use (and I’d even doubt the safety when using with cats!). Some ASDA stores do seem to have a few bags left of the older variety, but with no way of knowing prior to purchase if this is the case with a bag I would not recommended even doing this.

If the product ever returns to it’s original composure I’ll definitely use it again; but until them I’m staying far away.

Got some of this when found out wood shavings were bad.
I’m not too keen on the grey colour, but that just me.
I think ours smelled peculiar, we only ever have had one packet though. It’s quite dusty.
I used it with some shredded paper. Didn’t notice much change in lack of smell (from wood shavings) although I could also smell the ‘peculiar’ smell.
It’s not very soft, when i put my hand in the girls tank, resting my hand on the floor it gets quite painful after a short amount of time, making dents in my hand.
Overall it’s good, but rather dusty!

Have switched to Megazorb now.

I’ve used this litter for a long time and I think its great:
1. no dust (so it wont effect breathing)
2. no smell
3. no scented odour ( so it wont effect breathing)
4.easy to get out.

But I think there’s just a few problems I think its to small and I also think it doesn’t really soak up the wee as much as carefresh but it is cheaper.
