Since our normal substrate has changed (BM Paper Litter) and Carefresh was quite dear for the amount of animals we’ve got to clean out, my husband has been robbing his work’s shredder! They’ve got two different ones that shred the paper differently, one is a bit chunkier (shown in pic) and the other is quite fine. And the animals seem to thrive on it! I tend to use the chunkier one in litter trays and bedding areas and the finer stuff for floor covering and it controls odours without irritating any of the critters’ sensitive respiratory systems! And it’s FREE!! Has prompted us to get a shredder for home!

Pros:

If you have a shredder, it’s free. Also, it’s a great way to further protect yourself from identity fraud: not only will your sensitive documents be shredded, they’ll also be soaked in mouse urine and covered in mouse poo. I have also heard that people whose rodents are allergic to other substrates are fine with shredded paper, so it’s worth a try for mice with sensitive noses.

Cons:

It’s not very absorbent, and it’s not particularly soft either.

Overall:

I have a shredder at home, and I’ve found that I can generate all the substrate I need just by shredding all my junk mail and other unnecessary bits of paper instead of putting them in the recycling bin as I normally would. Also, as I have spiny mice, absorbency and odour control are not as critical for me as they would be if I had fancy mice. So shredded paper is the perfect substrate for me and my mice. However, I have only rated it 7/10 as I know absorbency and odour control are very important considerations for most people, and those are its weak points. It also doesn’t strike me as being as soft and comfortable for nesting in as things like Carefresh, Safebed paper wool, or even newspaper.

I find this litter quite good as it is free. If you have a shredder that is! I shred it and then rip it up into finer chunks as I don’t have a finer shredder.

Pros-
This is free and works quite well
Mice won’t have repiratory problems
Absorbs quite well
Mice also use it as nesting material in their houses
Doesn’t smell if changed every 3-4 days
My mice like to burrow in it and hide in it as it is thick
It is useful as I just rip up my old excercise book or newspaper. Both work well.

Cons-
Not very soft
mice can get tangled in the long bits
mice may eat it and may cause stomach problems
Not good for mother mice and her kids
