My Meeces - Other Pets

It thought it only fair that my non mousie pets get a mention so here is a page just for them!

Tess

Meg and Tess were my first ever rats and are very special to me. Tess was outgoing, confident and to be honest down right mad from the minute we first brought her home and despite having just turned a year old shows no signs of ‘growing up’! Nosey to the extreme Tess always appears at the bars if the door bell rings or a packet rustles and during out time she is everywhere and in to everything. She has been known to jump large gaps, climb vertical brick walls and scale floor to ceiling curtains and I’m constantly amazed and entertained by her energy and intelligence. Update - Sadly Tess developed a degenerative diease in her old age and had to be put to sleep in april of 2008.

Meg

Bought at the same time as Tess Meg was a completely different kettle of fish! For a long time she was terrified of people, noise and just about everything else to the point that she would only come out of hiding to have a drink if we turned out all the lights and sat in silence. Gradually though we began to see her confidence grow, after a lot of time, patience and reading the TV book out loud to her! She never learned to like being handled but she is a totally different girl now, confident and nosey like Tess, although with her poor eyesight she has a tendency to run into things! Despite not liking cuddles Meg with always jump up on the sofa to run about on my lap and has a thing about grooming my hair, especially when it’s just been washed and is still damp! Meg has also become best buddies with Gus since he moved in. Update - when her last remaining friend and lifelong companion was pts I made the heartbreaking decision to rehome Meg to a good friend of mine to live with her female ratties. As difficult as it was for me she settled in well and lived happily for several months until just a few weeks before her 3rd birthday.

Dylan

Dylans story is a tragic one. He was a rescue boy with an appalling background who was taken in by Furryfriends small pet rescue centre in Surrey. He was neutered due to aggression and was therefore looking for a home with girl rats and inspite of the many offers of homes that rolled in I was lucky enough to be choosen as his new Mum. Sadly it wasn’t to be and he died during his first night here, before he ever got the chance to experience the good life he deserved. This photo, taken at Furryfriends, is consequently the only one I have of him. Dylan now sleeps under the rose bush in my garden.

Gus

After what happened with Dylan I wasn’t sure I would want to take another rescue rat in but when I was offered the chance to home another neutered boy in need of a home I found I couldn’t say no. Gus again came from Furryfriends and has been here since the middle of July 2006. Despite not starting out well his introduction to Meg and Tess turned out fine and he moved in with them a week after arriving here. He is quite wary of sudden movements or noises at the moment but is happy to approach me and take treats from my hand so I’m confident he will be fine in time. He gets on well with both girls but adores Meg and the two of them can usually be found curled up asleep together looking like ying and yang! Update - Gus passed away in December of 2007 leaving me with just the two girls. :(

Sea Monkeys

My tank of sea monkeys became famous due to a photo diary I started about them on a UK rat forum. They were bought for the benefit of my daughters but were totally fascinating until I somehow ended up with a tank of all males and they understandably died out!
