My Meeces - Loved and Lost

This page is dedicated to all the little furballs who are no longer with us (including all the meeces pre 2005 who I don’t have photos of) listed in the order they passed away. Sleep well all my little angels.

2005/2006

Ruby

Yes the little beauty in the sites logo! I bought this little girl in a weak moment in garden centre - who could resist those ears! She was a beautiful, friendly and cheeky little girl who loved nothing more than a tickle under her chin. One morning I found her dead in her bed - at just 3 months old - in December of 2005. She looked as though she’d just gone off to sleep and never woken up, Ri-ri was curled up with her. I’d never had a seemingly perfectly healthy mouse die like this before and her loss spurred me into action to start building a long planned website dedicated to promoting, learning and sharing about all aspects of the welfare, well-being and keeping of mice as pets.

Button

My Button was a very sweet, friendly girl who sadly died far too young from a very severe skin condition. My vet, myself and Button herself battled for several weeks to make her better but in the end she was too weak and slipped away in my hands, at the age of 9 months, in July of 2006.

Lissy

Lissy is my new little girl who I homed for a friend who had an unfortunate change of circumstance and felt she couldn’t keep her. She was the runt of a litter and is a tiny little thing which is why I decided she’d be the perfect company for Mini. The two of them have lived together from the day they first met and as I’d hoped get on like a house of fire! Lissy is still very shy of me and has an underlying health issue with her breathing but is settling in well and will be updated once I’ve gotten to know her a bit better. Update - sadly since this entry was written Lissy has passed away. She became ill very suddenly and died of a suspected stroke on 4th September 2006.

Ri-ri

Rhiannon, or Ri-ri for short, was ‘acquired’ from a nearby garden centre after I noticed her eye was missing. I had suffered a total lack of willpower and just bought Ruby and Button when I saw her and after a sleepless night worrying about what would become of her I phoned the manager to convince her to let her come live here. A very nerve-racking 30 mins later she agreed and I had my first rescued mouse. Ri-ri is a shy, quiet little girl who gets on well with everyone whether mouse or human. Her best friend was Ruby who she pined for after she died and consequently spent alot of extra time with me, often travelling round the house with me sleeping in my pocket! She’s since formed a firm bond with Lily my other one-eyed girly but always seems open to a bit extra human contact. Updated - Ri-ri passed away during the night of Tuesday 19th September 2006. She will be sorely missed.

Mini

Mini was originally supposed to be a hamster with three legs - I wanted to home him but was disappointed when I was unable to so my husband surprised me with Mini instead! He picked her as she was the smallest supposedly 6 week old he’d ever seen and he knows about my weakness for the runt of a litter! She was amazingly tame from the moment she was brought home and is the only one of my mice I’d trust to free range on the sofa for a day at a time, which she often did before her new friend arrived. Despite her size she has an enormous appetite and a total addiction to Special K cereal! Unfortunately the bigger girls in the cage didn’t take well to Mini and after many attempts to get them to live together she ended up in a separate cage with the new girl Lissy. Since Lissy’s sudden death she has been successfully introduced to Ri-ri. Update - shortly after this was written Mini developed respiratory problems and died on 20/10/06 aged 7 months old.

Lily

Lily was originally advertised in the Freeads and was posted about on a rat forum I’m a member off. I phoned up to offer her a home and shall be forever glad that I did! The lovely person who collected her for me found her in the most squalid, filthy conditions, alone with an eye missing, diarrhoea, a huge growth on her face and alive with lice! When she arrived here the following day she was straight to the vets and then in quarantine for three weeks whilst the lice were treated. Luckily she responded well to all her treatments and just a few weeks later she was a different mouse! It was Lily who steered my mouse keeping path towards rescues and fosters and she’s a very special and super tame and friendly little girl. Update - Lily died aged a year on 5/11/06 from a degenerative neurological disease.

Teddy

Teddy was named by my youngest daughter. She has always been ‘queen bee’ in the girls cage and quickly puts any newcomers in their place! She has unfortunately been troubled by recurrent ear infections throughout much of her adult life which, whilst now finally all cleared up and under control, have left her with quite badly deformed ears. At 21 months old she is in great health and looks to (hopefully) be with us for some time to come. Update - Teddy lived to celebrate her 2nd birthday but had to be put sleep shortly after on the 29th Dec 2006 after a lump that developed in her ear canal turned out to be a non-removable tumour.
2007

Miffy

Miffy was named by my eldest daughter after a cartoon rabbit. She was bought at the same time as Teddy and the two have always been devoted to each other. Sadly Miffy became my introduction to obesity in mice and has been considerably over weight for most of her life. She’s always been a contented, placid girl who never batted an eyelid during introductions and is usually at the centre of a sleepy mouse pile! Despite her size and her rapidly thinning fur she seems quite contented pottering around the cage and whilst she finds climbing a bit much these days I think she has a few miles left on the clock yet! Update - Miffy too lived until her 2nd birthday but died a week to the day after Teddy on 5/1/07.

Africa

Africa won my heart the second she arrived here by instantly running up my arm and snuffling my neck. Given that on arrival most mice are quite understandably a bit unsettled and wary of me this was quite a unusual thing to happen and she proved to be just the friendliest little thing in the short time she was here. Sadly she arrived with a lump which had more than doubled in size in the week before it was removed. She recovered beautifully from the operation but she was lump-free for less than 6 weeks before it was back, in the same place and bigger than before. To begin with it didn’t seem to bother her but within a few short weeks it grew massive and Africa changed completely, a sure sign she was growing more uncomfortable with it. She was put to sleep on 10th February 2007 and I cuddled her little body all the way home so she could be buried here.

Imogen

OK not the best photo (laughs) but being quite a shy girl this is how many of them come out of this little lady! She was one of four that a friend of mine rehomed to me when she could no longer keep them, the others being Africa, Dewey and Ebony. Funnily enough I’d already had her here before on a foster basis and was delighted to have her back. She currently lives in my main cage with 9 friends and being very placid by nature is the first to take any newbies under her wing with a wash and a snuggle! UPDATE, Immy died peacefully in her fuzzbutts cube on 4th march 2007.

Cookie

Cookie used to affectionately be known as my ‘wild’ girl. As a youngster she was virtually unhandleable and would leap from any height to escape being touched. She could also jump amazingly high from a standing start leaving my other mice staring after her with bemused looks on their faces! Luckily she’s settled down as she’s grown older and will now tolerate being handled for short periods but is much happier running around whether inside or outside of the cage and loves exploring. Being a satin coat she’s also exceptionally shiny and can require sunglasses to look at in bright light! UPDATE, Cookie died in her sleep three weeks before her 2nd birthday on 5/4/07.

Google

Don’t be fooled by the angelic little face, if ever a mouse deserved horns this one does! Google was named by my (IT professional) husband and is an absolute little stunner! Sadly she also has a very aggressive streak when it comes to mice smaller than herself and is the first female mouse I’ve ever had to draw blood from a cagemate. Thankfully she’s lovely with humans and has a very cheeky, playful and endearing personality. I’ve always thought she ought to have a curl in the middle of her forehead! UPDATE, Google died on 8th April 2007. She was two weeks away from turning 2.

Dewey

As mentioned above Dewey came from my friend. He’s a neutered boy and I’d intended for him to live with my big group but by some miracle it turned out he was destined to be the only mouse ever to be accepted by Charlie so the two of them share a large tank together. Dewey is another big cuddly boy, he actually closes his eyes when you scratch behind his ears!! UPDATE Dewey died very suddenly in April 2007.

Heidi

Heidi was one of the second pair of spiny mice I homed. She and Amelia got on great with Molly and Matilda from the off and the four of them all lived together very happily until Heidi passed away unexpectedly in march 2007.

Baby

Baby was the little girl who lived with Grace when I picked them up. I chose her name very originally because she was a baby lol, the little runt of a litter born shortly after they were rescued. Several of her littermates had already died so it was sad but not a huge shock when Baby passed away suddenly on 18/5/07. As you can see from her picture she never even got her adult spines through. :(

Old Bear

More often just called Bear this little old man was Hoggles original friend and cage mate. He was a super friendly and rather tatty looking old spiny boy who very sadly died just a few weeks after arriving here. Lost 26/5/07.

Charlie

Charlie came from Furryfriends small animal rescue centre where he’d sadly already spent 9 long months. I’d not had any male mice for many years before him so he sparked much research into male behaviour, aggression and living alone. Charlie has always been an exceptionally cuddly and people friendly boy which has earned him the nickname Charlie-bear - he’s a very large, soft buck and loves snuggling up in a pocket or the crook of my arm. UPDATE I reluctantly had Charlie PTS at the end of May 2007 at the great old age of 2 and a half.

Hazel

Hazel was a foster mouse who never left! She came in with 4 other girls having been rescued from the fate of being fed to a snake. Her ’sisters’ all went off to a lovely new home but Hazel was seriously overweight so I decided to keep her and try to get her weight down. She’s a very shy girl and to begin with acted as though she’d never been handled. She was an instant hit with my other girls and is one of the easiest intros I’ve done. She never really learnt to like hands but doesn’t mind the odd cuddle. Shes a lovely girl and another one who can usually be found in the centre of a sleepy mouse pile! UPDATE Hazel passed away from old age on the 12th August 2007.

Benjamin

Usually referred to as Benji, this little boy came in as part of a group of 8 fosters. 6 of the group were rehomed but the place for the last two fell through and at about the same time I had to split them for fighting. Benji was neutered ready to go to off to new home but after I received the devastating news that 4 of the previously rehomed boys had all died suddenly I decided to keep him. Benji currently awaits being introduced to my group of girls once enough time has elapsed from his op.Since I wrote this Benji has been successfully introduced to Felix and a group of females and is a much calmer and more contented little man. UPDATE Benji has passed away today the 20/8/07

Fanulla / Lucy

Fanulla was named by her foster Mum and although I wasn’t going to change it my children had a different idea and so she currently goes by both Fanulla and Lucy! She came from Wales and as her original owner couldn’t find a rescue centre to take her she was fostered by a forum member who then homed her to me. Shes a very sweet, pretty little girl who despite living alone all her life settled with my big group without so much as a squeak! UPDATE My little lady has died in her sleep, 22/8/07.

Felix

Felix was the other remaining foster boy and has also been neutered due to aggression. He is totally gorgeous but very shy and I think he will benefit hugely from being introduced to other mice. Felix was only the second of my meeces to have been named by my husband - I think it really suits him!To update Felix now lives with Benji and a group of females. He has become very tame and laid back with both people and other mice now that its hard to believe how aggressive he once was! UPDATE Felix suffered a stroke and had to be put to sleep on 29/8/07.

Whisper

Whisper came from the pets corner at Birdworld in Surrey and was named after their famous, and very beautiful, barn owl. She is a very lively girly who seems to race round everywhere at top speed and is always far too busy for cuddles, prefering to run up arms and round shoulders. This photo of her is a one off, they usually come out a mouse shaped blur! UPDATE Whisper lived to a good age but a tumour in her spine meant I had to make the difficult decision to have her put to sleep on 1/9/07

Ebony

Ebony is the blackest black mouse I’ve ever seen! Photos don’t seem to do her justice but she’s stunningly beautiful and black as night, I literally couldn’t take my eyes off her when she arrived! She’s also a very energetic and speedy little girl who uses every inch of the enormous cage my big group occupies. UPDATE Ebony passed away in her sleep in November 2007.

Elliott

Elliott came here as a foster after I saw him being advertised on another forum. It stated that he was extremely aggressive with other mice so after asking about any health problems I offered to have him here in order to be neutered and then (hopefully!) introduced to dutch foster who was alone following the death of Felix. Unfortunately despite several attempts at introducing them at various lengths of time after Elliott’s neuter I realised it wasn’t going to work so he moved in with the 7 girls in the big cage. They took to him instantly so Elliott stopped being a foster and is now one of my permanent residents. UPDATE Elliott passed away in Dec 2007.
2008

Angel

As mentioned in Emily’s story Angel was the first of the two girls to be handed over when their owner no longer wanted them. She had been living with a boy (who had died) and was suspected to be pregnant which I believe is why they didn’t want her! Luckily it turned out she was just a little bit podgy though. Angel was quite shy when she first got here and both her and Emily were a bit overwhelmed when they first moved into the big cage. It didn’t take them long to get used to it though and Angel was the first to make friends with my other mice and explore everywhere. She’s become a very friendly little girl with both people and other mice now, a favourite for cuddles with my daughters! Update - Angel died at a good age in feb 2008.

Emily

Emily arrived here with Angel from a lovely foster Mum in Devon. She’d been asked to take them from a friend of a friend who couldn’t be bothered with them anymore, although originally only Angel was handed over as the owner for some reason decided she wanted to keep Emily. Sadly she was called ‘thing’ and continually escaped so she was living semi wild and was apparently unhandable and bit all the time. Strangely enough though she never bit her foster mum and has not showed any aggression towards me either, the above picture of her snuggled in my dressing gown was taken shortly after she arrived here! Emily has settled beautifully since she’s been here and although she can be a bit of a trouble maker with newcomers you’d never know the sort of life she had before! Update - Emily was put to sleep due to a tumour in June 2008.

Bobble

Little Bobble is the runt of the group of boys and has had me worried on a number of occasions. He was visably smaller than his brothers when they arrived and seemed to be on the receiving end of Timmy’s hot temper before he was separated too. None of the others pick on him but he can still be a bit of a loner at times and doesn’t seem to have a best friend. He has however put on a good amount of weight and closed the gap in size a bit now although I still tend to sneak him out for extra treats from time to time as I did in the beginning. He’s a very quiet and cuddly boy and when he’s out he spends a fair bit of time snuggled down the front of my top!! Bobble also has a bit of trouble with his respiratory system which worries me for the future a bit but in general I think he’s come on well since he first got here. Update Bobble passed away after an illness in August 2008.

Jake

Jake was part of the same group as Timmy however he happily stayed living with his brothers. He’s very aloof by nature and tolerates human interaction rather than liking it, he seems to think people are a bit of an inconvenience lol and I even found myself on the sharp end of his teeth once when changing his bedding. He is however very attached to Ollie in particular and if you see one up and about the other is never far away, a mouses mouse if ever there was one. He’s a gorgeous boy though and I wouldn’t change him for the world. Update Jake died unexpectedly in also in August 2008.

Ollie

Otherwise known as spidermouse lol! Ollie is the boldest of the group of 4 that are still together and is forever getting into all sorts of strange contortions whilst playing, hence his nickname. If a toy can possibly be hung from upside down by one foot then you can be sure it’ll be Ollie to find out! He and Jake are the most bonded of the group but unlike Jake Ollie is is always happy to see you and is usually first out when the door opens. He is just the most fun loving, lively boy and its impossible not to adore him! Update Ollie followed his brothers to the bridge in September 2008. Like Jake it was completely unexpected and he was far too young.

Joe

Joe is the father of all the babies Pippa had before coming here and her little soulmate. When they were separated upon arriving in rescue they apparently spent all their time up at the bars trying to get to each other and when finally reunited here (after he was neutered) it was immediately obvious that they remembered each other. They are totally devoted to each other and Joe is never happier than when snuggled up with his Pippa. He is still getting to know the rest of his new cagemates and there has been a little friction between him and Timmy but even so he seems to be settling well and I’m very happy I was able to take him to be with Pippa and Maisy. Update Sadly Joe died unexpectedly in Sept 08.

Honey

Both Honey and Jessica came from a forum member who was having to move home. Unfortunately the new landlord wouldn’t allow pets so all her lovely, well cared for animals needed to be rehomed. She had six girls all of whom I took in as fosters but when a home offer came up for four of them I decided to keep Honey and Jessica permanently. Honey was quite people shy but got on well with the rest of my group and I was dismayed when she suddenly passed away just a few months after arriving, at the end of sept 2008.

Pippa

Pippa is Joe’s little wifey. When they arrived in rescue she was sadly both nursing a litter and because they’d been left together was pregnant as well. Amazingly she somehow coped with all her babies and proved to be an excellent Mum despite only being young herself. She missed Joe though, trying to get through the cage bars to be with him so he was neutered and both now live here with me in my big group which also includes their daughter Maisy. Update Pippa passed away at the end of October 08.
2009

Dot/Little Bug

Dot is Poppy’s sister. When I collected them from the vet she didn’t look very well and the way she scuttled about earnt her the nickname little bug. Both the vet and I had concerns that she might not survive her ordeal but amazingly within days she had recovered very well and soon she was the same size as Poppy. She also turned out to be the bolder of the two and is much more inclined to come to the door for treats than her sister. The occasional bout of noisy breathing is now the only way you’d know how unwell she once was! Update Dot died in feb 09.

Poppy

Poppy and her sister Dot (below) are affectionately referred to as my ‘dumped’ girls. They had been found in a small box in a children’s play park by a member of the public who had then handed them in to their nearest vet. It happened to be one I was registered with so they called me to see if I could take them. Sadly the third mouse who was also in with the girls had already died from cold and hunger (it was January and there was no food in the box) but somehow they survived and have gone from strength to strength since being here. Poppy is shy with people but loves other mice and in general is doing very well in spite of her difficult start in life. Update, Poppy passed away in Feb 09.

Pete

Petey is another of the group of 4 boys that came as fosters. It took me ages to settle on an name for him although for some reason I knew it needed to start with a ‘p’ lol! Pete is inquisitive but a bit shy with it so most of the photos I have are of him peeking out of a hiding place like the one above. He is happy to be handled and loves his brothers although he seems to adopt a ‘whoever is closest at the time’ approach to company, favouring no one in particular that I can tell as long as he’s got someone to snuggle up with! Update Pete died in March 2009.

Katy

Erica

Percy

Timmy

Tim arrived as one of a group of 5 foster boys but quickly showed himself to be aggressive and before long had to be separated. He was neutered with the intention of moving in with my group of girls before I decided I was able to keep the other boys and so was the first of them that I ‘got to know’ properly. Timmy is a very active and energetic little man who is often up and about when all his cage mates are asleep and loves getting out and exploring. He is also very friendly with people but is usually far too busy to be fussed for more than a second a two! Until she passed away his best buddy was Emily and he seems at a bit of a loss at the moment. I’m hoping he will settle again with the introduction of some new friends in the next few days.UPDATE: Timmy passed away at a good age in june 2009.
