east yorkshire areas? I'm find it impossible to sex my baby mice. I need them sexing accurately in 2 weeks time so i can seperate the males from females and i'm not experienced enough to do it. I've tried by looking at pics online but just can't tell the difference. I need an experienced board member to help. I'll pay you for your time. If you could pm me your location then i'll try get a lift to you asap. Thanks!

Farside, if you get no replies, your own vet will do it. All you need to do is book an appointment on the week you want the wee ones seperated, take two carriers with you (one with all the babies in and an empty one) to the vets and seperate them there as the vet sexes them for you? You can then place any male babies in the spare carrier and go home, where you should already have their seperate cage ready and the females can stay with mum. You can actually take mum along aswell for a health check?
It`s the best I can think of if you don`t get any replies from board members. I would ring up some taxi companies and ask what they charge for a return trip? Maybe it would be worth your while setting the fare aside for a taxi journey and get right to the vets and home again? Might be less noisy and not so much hassle having to change from trains to buses? Or maybe a family member, a cousing, aunt, uncle? Maybe they would oblige for the petrol fare? _________________ Of all the people I know, my mice are the most...human. |

I would be careful about having a vet do it personally. Unless they are experienced with rodents they might not be able to do it accurately.
Farside are you anywhere near Helpringham? I know a lady there who runs a rat rescue and also has mice, she might be able to help if you can get to her. _________________ Sarah |

I'll give my local vets a go, I've sent them an e-mail to make me an appointment for when the babies are exactly 4 weeks old so then i can seperate them at the vets. Hopefully they can do it _________________ If it aint broken then give it here. I'll break it! |

How did you get on?
I would keep double checking over the next few days (not sure how old they are now) to make sure you have everyone where they need to be. Vets aren't necessarily all that savvy on baby mice...in fact my vets reply when I went to check my two baby girls was "its very hard to tell at this age" and they were 6 weeks So I got a link from here showing sexing pictures and used that to double check. _________________ Freddy 2:- currently home to Lupin, Lily, Tulip and Solo, HH home to Rose and Poppy / Foster Mum to:-Patrick

Yeah i'll ask some others but the only problem would be getting to them, I don't live near any. The closest to me is cleethorpes and that is 40+ miles away and i dont drive. _________________ If it aint broken then give it here. I'll break it! |

Put them up for rehoming on here? I'm sure a mouse train could be organised if someone was interested? Please don't give any more to the pet shop as you can't possibly say they wouldn't sell them to a reptile owner etc. _________________ Freddy 2:- currently home to Lupin, Lily, Tulip and Solo, HH home to Rose and Poppy / Foster Mum to:-Patrick

I tried that already over a month ago but nothing came of it.

It`s a tricky one when your dealing with free-ads and pets up for adoption. Unless you know the person or can get a reference for their good intentions, you just don`t know if they are genuine or not. There is`nt really a way you can check them out or their cage or husbandry, so it`s a chance you take if you hand them over to someone who calls at your home without actually seeing their set-up. Some people are genuine and only want to help, but when mice are involved and are `free to good homes`, you need to be a bit more if you know what I mean!
Was it the males they were interested in then if your planning to keep hold of your females? That in itself needs careful thought especially as it sounds as if your young males are already acting in a way that may mean fall outs. Splitting them up if need be would be a short term solution if that`s needed. I would also home them in pairs if that`s possible. So anyone wanting a male from you should be happy to take them in pairs. If they only want one, then I`d be suspicious because most genuine mouse keepers would`nt want a male living alone if it was avoidable. _________________ Of all the people I know, my mice are the most...human. |

I always used to have a pet mouse when i was younger and i always kept just the one, So i can vouch for people who want just the one, It's not that we do it on purpose but sometimes people just don't realise, I only found out that mice need to be kept with other mice when i joined this forum lol.

Whew..! I`m sure your vet will help. The nipples on a female are more visible near/above the genital area, between the back legs. I notice this when my adult girls are climbing about the cage. I seem to be able to visually see nipples as they climb and they do appear bigger at the lower end. Hope everything works out for you in the end. As I said earlier, don`t give up. _________________ Of all the people I know, my mice are the most...human. |
